Charging Systems

This module outlines standards for onboard and offboard charging systems of electric vehicles. These systems include public, residential, indoor and outdoor charging stations and related components.

Hazards Based Safety Engineering

  • Resistance to Weather Elements
    Rain test, accelerated aging tests

  • Resistance to Physical Strain
Bending, flexing, insertion/withdrawal, impact, vibration, etc.

  • Abnormal Thermal Performance
Absence of cooling means test (seven-hour normal operation with cooling function removed)

Prevention and Mitigation

A risk of fire, electric shock or injury to persons exists when:

Flame, burning oil or molten metal is emitted from the enclosure of the unit as evidenced by ignition, glowing or charring of cheesecloth or tissue paper.

The insulation breaks down when tested or live parts are made accessible (see Protection of Users – Accessibility of Uninsulated Live Parts, Film-Coated Wire, and Moving Parts – and User Servicing)
