This Standard covers the safety of residential refrigerating appliances. It includes entrapment
protection requirements for household refrigerators, in line with the Refrigerator Safety Act (RSA) of
1956.
Prior to the RSA, refrigerators were typically equipped with latches that held the doors shut when not
in use and could only be opened from the outside. The RSA was enacted to help prevent the suffocation
deaths of young children who could become trapped inside. UL 60335-2-24, the Standard for Safety
Requirements for Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, Part 2: Particular Requirements for
Refrigerating Appliances, Ice-Cream Appliances and Ice-Makers, requires entrapment warning statements
in product literature, along with door latch release tests to help ensure the doors can be opened from
the inside.
